On Monday August 10, 2020, the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago held its 14th General Election since gaining independence in 1962 from the United Kingdom, and the 22nd National Election in Trinidad and Tobago to elect forty-one (41) Members to the 12th Republican Parliament.
The People’s National Movement under the leadership of Dr. Keith Rowley won 22 of the 41 seats while the United National Congress under the leadership of Mrs. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC won 19 seats.
The Ceremonial Opening of the 12th Republican Parliament took place on August 28, 2020. During that time, 31 Senators were appointed to the Senate while the Members of the House were administered the Oath of Allegiance or Affirmation as Members of the House.
Ms. Christine Kangaloo and Mrs. Bridgid Annisette-George were reelected President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.
